Getting an education is something Americans have felt obliged to provide for, or even insist upon their citizens for generations, mainly because it benefits society as a whole to have a educated populace. Business requires it to compete in a world market. And the list of other benefits goes on and on.
In the not too distant past a high school education provided a reasonable education to allow most graduates to be productive citizens, but that has changed.
Education is money well spent, and we have lost sight of that fact. We have cut funds continually when we should have been making investment.
At a time like this, taking away that debt from a huge group of educated people that would otherwise be starting businesses, and buying houses is a no brainer. It would bring back so much more to the economy than it takes to pay it off.
It's time we moved forward and repaired our failing infrastructure. Education is a huge part of that infrastructure.
We need to pay for college education for any American citizen that wants it. Not just pay off old debt.
